Overview

Faculty of Health Sciences of the Wroclaw Medical University is one of the oldest and most important in our region university that teaches medical personnel. In the year of 2018 we were celebrating our 40-years anniversary, we are proud that we have many alumni, who offer professional help to patients in hospitals, clinics, are working in health administration in Poland and worldwide. Foreign students have possibility to attend in our study programmes:
  • Nursing
  • Midwifery (Obstetrics)
  • Physiotherapy
  • Dietetics (Nutrition)
  • Public Health
  • Emergency Medicine
We are open for students who are interrested in cross-programme classes, if the Learning Agreement is previously accepted by the sending university. We allow, for example, the possibility to take a part in the classes from Obstetrics, Nutrition or Public Health programme for someone who is a student of Nursing or Medicine. A detailed offer of our programm is available on the menu "Erasmus study" and "Erasmus traineeship".
 

Major studies and research projects

The main research directions of the Faculty include: the biological bases of schizophrenia, depression and mental health; determinants of fertility; determinants of ageing; health education and health promotion; experimental emergency medicine; programmes for cardiovascular disease prevention; health psychology; e-health technologies and problems; human resource management in health care, ergonomy in health professionals, management in health care, pharmacoeconomics, quality of health care, public health, healthy nutrition and diet treatment, new approch to teaching in nursing, obstetrics, physiotherapy and emergency medicine. 
 

Collaboration and international relations

Faculty of Health Sciences is a full member of international organizations, with which it is jointly implementing international research and teaching projects:
  • ISSA - International Social Security Association in Hamburg (ergonomics in medical professions, good practices in the transport of patients and care for patients)
  • ASPHER - Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region in Brussels (new approach to public health, european teaching programmes in public health)
  • PURE - Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiological Study (healthy ageing, diet in the treatment of diseases, environmental hazards on human health)
 

Top Scholars

Our scientific teams leaders are scholars - scientists, who are heads of divisions and departments. They care about scientific programmes and high quality of students education:
  • Prof. Joanna Rosińczuk, RN, PhD - is the first in Poland nurse with a full-professor title, specialist of neurological nursing, Head of the Department of the Clinical Nursing.  Conducts research on the aspects of quality of nursing care, implementation of new solutions in treatment of wounds and bedsores, research in nursing.
  • Prof. Piotr Ponikowski, MD, PhD, FESC - is a physician, specialist in cardiology, Head of the Division of Heart Diseases, President of the Polish Cardiac Society, Chairman of the 2016 ESC Heart Failure Guidelines. Number of publications (peer reviewed): total: >600, total IF >2800, total number of citations >57000, H-index: 100.
  • Prof. Tomasz Szydełko, MD, PhD - is a physician, specialist in urology and oncology, Head of the Division of Oncology and Palliative Care. Conducts research on the oncology in medical and nursing practice, quality of life of the patients with cancer, new technology and new approches in urology and urological nursing.
  • Prof. Andrzej Szuba, MD, PhD - is a physician, specialist in internal medicine angiology and hypertensiology, Head of the Division of Angiology. Conducts research on the internal medicine, impact of enviromental hazards on human health.
  • Prof. Bożena Regulska - Ilow, PhD - is a pharmacist and bromatologist, specializes in nutrition and dietetics, Head of the Division of Dietetics. Conducts research on the aspects of nutrition and dietetics in medical treatment, influence of diet on the health of human, biological bases of diet in the metabolic processes.
  • Prof. Izabella Uchmanowicz, RN, PhD, FESC - is a nurse, specialist of cardiology nursing. Conducts research on the cardiology nursing, her current project is "Frailty in Heart Failure". She is involved in the European project RANCARE (Rationing of Nursing Care).
  • Dr Piotr Karniej, PhD, MBA - is an economist, manager and public health specialist. Head of the Department of Public Health, Assistant Professor on the Faculty of Health Sciences. Is responsable for a public health studies, researches in social exclusion, health exclusion, health and social economics, health management, public management, human resources researches in medicine and healthcare.
